The materials that power so many of our digital technologies and electronic devices, from laptops to smart phones, are violently extracted from lands, places, and communities continuously and most structurally harmed by colonialism and capitalism. These lands and places include Congo, and my collaborators and I recognize that the ongoing genocide occurring in Congo is entangled in the materials infrastructure of the very digital technologies that we relied on in the process of writing this chapter together. Additionally, we ask: Do we account for the contaminants and carcinogens released in the extraction and processing of the minerals that make up these devices and technologies or are they merely externalities? How does one take stock of the conflict minerals that are a part of the infrastructural slag? |

The labor infrastructure scaffolding this chapter involved a collaborative, consistent, and committed labor of care, especially as I and my co-authors connected from various lands, including sovereign Indigenous lands, using digital infrastructure built on and through Indigenous lands—and equally, as we scheduled our co-writing, asynchronous writing, and co-editing work on a weekly basis whilst also navigating precarious careers. In researching for this chapter, we did not have any research assistants nor did we as co-authors seek any external copyediting support. However, the tools and software we used in the process of co-writing this piece are powered and built through extraction from land and water, often located in Indigenous territories and the Global South, and the folks who provide integral labor in running these infrastructures are often working under immensely precarious and coercive conditions. The writing of this chapter during my on-campus research hours, furthermore, was enabled by the otherwise invisible labor of IT and campus technology staff; departmental librarian staff for keeping open library resources both analog and digital; and campus staff for their everyday maintenance of the research lab. |
