Not only does this city have outgoing locals and thriving local businesses, it also flaunts a vibrant history.

Settled along the Willamette River, Salem was discovered in 1842 by Jason Lee and other Methodist missionaries. It was first named Chemeketa, meaning "place of rest". Later, its name legally changed into Salem, an anglicized variation of the Hebrew word shalom, meaning "peace".

In just a couple of years after its settlement, the city immediately developed as more people moved along the Oregon Trail and it became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851. During this time, Salem began establishing a diverse economy with huge industries, including lumber production, crop production, wood manufacturing, and more.

Jason Lee also started up the Oregon Institute, later referred to as Willamette University. This would lead to Salem being known as a home to numerous schools, including Western Baptist College and the Chemetka Community College.

Today, Salem embraces individuals and families of all types with natural attractions, fun events, and a quiet environment!
