You can also request additional relief by calling the number listed on the notice of the taxpayer or writing a response. The IRS reminds taxpayers that they must respond to balance notices in order to obtain relief.
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) was originally enacted March 27, 2019. The Employee Retention Credit, which is a refundable credit for certain employment taxes, equals 50% of qualified wages paid to employees by eligible employers, is a refundable credit. The Child Tax Credit (CTC), which is available to many families, has seen important changes that will be beneficial. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), 2021, expands the CTC only for tax year 2021. The 2021 Child Credit is available up to $3600 per child.
The notice contains details about relief for filers filing international information returns. This includes those reporting transactions with foreign trusts and receipt of foreign gift. It also includes details on how to obtain ownership interests in foreign corporations. Any tax return that is eligible must be filed no later than September 30, 2022, in order to be eligible for this relief.

Penalty relief may not be available in certain situations. These include when a false return was filed, when the penalties are part in an accepted offer in compromise, a closing agreement or where the penalties have been determined by a judge. See Notice 2022-36 for more information.

If a taxpayer is unable to fully pay their debt, they have the option of arranging an installment agreement. The plan allows them to spread their payments over time. Installment agreements options were extended by the IRS to remove financial statements, and substantiation in additional circumstances for balances greater than $250,000. If sufficient monthly payment proposals are made, they can be used. In an attempt to reduce Federal Tax Lien requirements, the IRS changed Installment Agreement procedures. It is now possible for some taxpayers that owe tax year 2019 only to have their Federal Tax Liens reduced.
