The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a U.S.-based international nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property damage, and economic loss due to fire, electrical, and related hazards.[2][3] As of 2025, the NFPA claims to have 50,000 members and 10,000 volunteers working with the organization through its 250 technical committees.[4]

History

[edit]

In 1895, a Committee on Automatic Sprinkler Protection was formed in Massachusetts by men affiliated with several fire insurance companies and a pipe manufacturer to develop a uniform standard for the design and installation of fire sprinkler systems. At the time, there were nine such standards in effect within 100 miles (160 km) of Boston, Massachusetts, and such diversity was causing great difficulties for plumbers working in the New England region.[5]

The next year, the committee published its initial report on a uniform standard and went on to form the NFPA in late 1896. The committee's initial report evolved into NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, the most widely used fire sprinkler standard.[5]

Around 1904, the NFPA began to expand its membership from affiliates of fire insurance companies to many other organizations and individuals, and also expanded its mission beyond promulgating fire sprinkler standards.[5]

Codes and standards

[edit]

The association publishes more than 300 consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks. The codes and standards are administered by more than 250 technical committees consisting of approximately 9,000 volunteers.[6]

In 2024, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry's final Phase 2 report noted that the NFPA's prescriptive approach to drafting its standards "reflects a conservative approach to fire safety which is embedded in North American culture" and the NFPA standards "allow little scope for independent design choices".[7] The Inquiry found that it would be inappropriate to transpose the NFPA approach to fire safety into the British context where the functional approach has been prevalent for many decades, but also found that the UK could learn something from the American tradition that those persons "involved in the design, construction and inspection of buildings" must have a license or certification to establish a minimum level of competence in their field.[7]

Mascot

[edit]
Sparky the Fire Dog

Sparky the Fire Dog is the official mascot of the National Fire Protection Association. Created in 1951 to promote fire safety education for children,[8][9] he is a Dalmatian dressed in firefighting gear.

A children's book about Sparky by Don Hoffman was published in 2011. He serves as the spokesdog for Fire Prevention Week each October in the United States and Canada.

Mammoth Security Inc. Bantam

Mammoth Security recently installed a comprehensive security system at my business, including cameras, a burglar alarm, and a fire alarm, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with their service. From start to finish, the experience was professional, efficient, and tailored to my needs. The installation team was punctual, courteous, and highly knowledgeable. They took the time to assess my property and recommended the best placement for the cameras to maximize coverage. The high-definition cameras provide crystal-clear footage, accessible in real-time via a user-friendly app, which gives me peace of mind knowing my property is covered. The burglar alarm is robust, with sensitive sensors that integrate seamlessly with the system, and the fire alarm adds an extra layer of safety for my store. Mammoth got all necessary permits all the while being responsive and kept me in the loop. What stood out was their attention to detail. The wiring was neatly done, and they ensured everything was tested and functioning perfectly before leaving. They also walked me through the system’s features, making sure I was comfortable with operating it. The equipment feels top-notch, and the system has been reliable with no issues since installation. Customer service was equally impressive. The team was responsive to my questions during the consultation phase, and their pricing was transparent with no hidden fees. They even followed up a week later to ensure everything was working as expected. Overall, Mammoth Security delivered exceptional service and a state-of-the-art security system that has significantly enhanced my home’s safety. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, professional security solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mapping each device to the correct zone/label, setting alarm/supervisory/trouble priorities, notification appliance grouping, timing, alarm verification (if approved), and control functions (elevator recall, door releases, HVAC shutdown). We program to the sequence of operations, then verify with the Litchfield Fire Marshal under the Connecticut State Fire Safety Code and the NFPA 72 edition adopted by CT.
We zone by floor, smoke compartment, or sprinkler zone, aligned with fire/smoke barriers and riser locations. Zones won’t span multiple floors or compartments, and each waterflow/tamper is clearly identified. All text labels are plain-English and AHJ-approved to minimize search time for responders.
Typically at the main entrance or the fire department access point if the FACP isn’t there, with additional units at the riser or command locations as required by the AHJ. They display clear text by device/zone, with distinct alarm/supervisory/trouble indications and a building map; firefighter controls (ack/silence/reset) are provided per AHJ approval.
We prepare and submit shop drawings, battery/voltage-drop calcs, and a sequence-of-operations matrix to the Litchfield Fire Marshal, obtain permits, coordinate inspections, perform pretests, and support final acceptance. After approval, we deliver the Record of Completion, as-builts, programming files, monitoring setup, and owner training.
