If your house is built before 1990, it may have knob-and-tube wiring. The wiring used in older homes is more likely to be dangerous, so it is a good idea to hire a licensed electrician to complete the work. While knob-and-tube wiring isn't dangerous on its own, it is prone to fires and pest infestation. For these reasons, you should only do it yourself if you're confident enough to perform it.

When choosing an electrician, it is crucial to know whether they are licensed. Licensed electricians have undergone training relevant to their job, such as apprenticeships. Their experience should be verified by their previous employers. The best way to determine if an electrician has the proper training and certification is to ask for references. Ask them about the level of customer satisfaction and the quality of their work. Make sure you get references and contact them if you aren't satisfied with their work.

The Electrical Contractors Licensing Board does not just license, but also investigates complaints made against them. If there is a complaint, a hearing before an Administrative Law judge will be set. The hearing will gather evidence, and determine whether disciplinary action needs to be taken. An electrician may have to retain a lawyer to protect their license in some cases. A good lawyer will save you time and avoid lengthy investigations.
