What to do if you owe the IRS a lot of moneyAn “Offer in Compromise” is a little-known but remarkably effective way that thousands of people in trouble with the IRS routinely eliminate tens of thousands of dollars in tax debts. It is a federal program that allows you to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount you owe. Sometimes significantly less, especially if you are from a low-income family.
If you are unable to comply with tax laws due to circumstances beyond the control of your company, you may be eligible for penalty relief.

This is your chance to revitalize your life and start over. Show that you are serious and take the matter seriously. They expect you will be consistent as they give you a lot of flexibility. While you are working on your agreement, it is important that you keep up with your payments and maintain compliance. The outcome of the Fresh Start decision will affect the timeline.
Disposable income is defined as monthly income less allowed monthly expenses. It is important to realize that the IRS may not approve all expenses. Common disallowed expenses may include tuition payments for dependents or credit card payment (disallowed since they are unsecured debt).
The Fresh Start Program was expanded in 2012, just a few months after its creation. This allowed more taxpayers to qualify for tax relief. The most important change to the program was that when an IRS examines a taxpayer for an offer in compromise, they reduce their calculation for the taxpayer’s future income. There have not been any major changes to the program since 2012. The rate at which IRS examiners are able to qualify taxpayers has fluctuated over the years. In 2020, the Fresh Start Tax Program received record numbers of qualification. The COVID-19 pandemic caused financial hardship for millions in America and led to a large increase in Fresh Start tax relief requests. In 2021, many taxpayers still face financial hardship, particularly students, parents, as well as small-business owners. Although the IRS Fresh Start Program qualification criteria could be looser for a while longer, tax experts believe that it is unlikely that they will ease their stringent application requirements for an extended time. You can find out your eligibility for tax debt relief by applying as soon as you can for the 2021 IRS Fresh Start Initiative Program.

If your employment tax deposits are not sufficient to cover the credit, you may request an advance payment from the IRS. An offer in compromise allows you to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount you owe. It may be a legitimate option if you can't pay your full tax liability or doing so creates a financial hardship. We consider your unique set of facts and circumstances:
An installment agreement is a contract between a debtor and a creditor that specifies the terms of a repayment plan. The agreement outlines the amount of the debt, the interest rate, the monthly payment amount, and the date by which the debt will be repaid in full. Installment agreements are often used to repay debts that are too large to be paid off in a single lump sum. They can also be used to restructure debts that are in danger of default. Installment agreements are typically written documents, but they can also be verbal agreements. In either case, it is important to get the agreement in writing to avoid any misunderstandings. Once an installment agreement is in place, both parties are legally bound to its terms. If the debtor fails to make a payment or otherwise defaults on the agreement, the creditor may take legal action to collect the debt.
Temporarily Delaying Collection — Taxpayers can contact the IRS to request a temporary delay of the collection process. If the IRS determines a taxpayer is unable to pay, it may delay collection until the taxpayer's financial condition improves.
If you are not satisfied with the offer, an IRS letter will inform you of the acceptable amount. Any report that lists reasons why an offer was rejected by the IRS will be provided to you by the IRS. Ask the IRS for a duplicate. If the IRS refuses, you can apply under the Freedom of Information Act.
If you are willing and able to pay monthly installments over the term of a plan the first payment should match the suggested monthly amount. This payment should not be made more than once per calendar month until IRS gives you notice. Once your offer is accepted, make monthly payments to your remaining balance until it is fully paid. After accepting the offer, this should take less than 24 month.
