Depending on your circumstances, the IRS might grant you additional time to file taxes and return. Individuals and businesses that are located in a federally declared disaster zone can receive a faster refund by filing amended returns to claim the loss from the previous tax year.
Penalty Abatement is the term the IRS uses for wiping out or reducing a penalty. Penalty Abatement can be considered a form of Fresh Start tax relief. However, the IRS will only apply Penalty Abatement for a reasonable cause.You can request Penalty Abatement at any level of IRS collections: by visiting a federal IRS campus, through an automated collection system, or by speaking to personnel at local IRS offices. The American Rescue Plan increased the Child Tax Credit from $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child for children over the age of six and from $2,000 to $3,600 for children under the age of six, and raised the age limit from 16 to 17. All working families will get the full credit if they make up to $150,000 for a couple or $112,500 for a family with a single parent (also called Head of Household).
To help struggling taxpayers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS issued Notice 2022-36 PDF, which provides penalty relief to most people and businesses who file certain 2019 or 2020 returns late. The IRS is also taking an additional step to help those who paid these penalties already. To qualify for this relief, eligible tax returns must be filed on or before September 30, 2022. If the applicant wishes to take advantage of the Academic Fresh Start Program's provisions, he or she must comply with all LSC admissions or re-admission requirements. He or she must also submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended before the Academic Fresh Start Program is granted. This provision excludes courses that may not count toward a degree. They also may not be included in GPA calculations or academic standing.
Once you have completed that calculation, the IRS will ask for your available assets in addition to a year or two of your income over what it considers acceptable expenditures. Even if you have secured debt or expenses that exceed your assets, the IRS can demand you to pay.
Financial aid applicants are not eligible for the Academic Fresh Start Program. The student might not be eligible for financial aid due to their academic performance.

Before registering, the applicant must sign the Academic Fresh Start Agreement with the college admissions department. This agreement confirms the applicant's decision to enroll under the academic fresh start statute. The applicant may not be eligible for course credit from courses taken at any college or university in the 10 years preceding enrollment if they apply under this statute.
